4 Stars

The writing and editing of the ARC version of this manuscript was clean, with no typos that I found and prettily constructed sentences. The world building was excellent, though not as vibrant as the first two novels in this series. Partly that could be a function of the fact that this is the third novel in the series. The characterization was excellent, with both hero and heroine being complex, sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was fairly good, though I was disappointed by the lack of steam in this one. The plot and pacing was tight and exciting, meaning I sped through reading this novel. There was a medium amount of well-justified angst on the part of both hero and heroine, considering their trauma history, but it was well balanced with the high stakes, so I still enjoyed the narrative structure. This novel used the Enemies to Lovers trope, the Partner in Trouble trope, and the Found Family trope. The world building was four stars. The plot and pacing was five stars. The characterization was five stars, and the development of the romantic relationship was three stars, because of the lack of sexual tension or steamy scenes. I therefore gave this novel a combined score of four stars. This novel had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a big plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy space opera with strong romantic elements/sci-fi romance novels. It has strong cross-genre appeal, in my opinion. I look forward to reading the next novel in the series when it releases, and I plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
