This novel was well written and edited, with few typos and well constructed sentences. The plot was exciting and the pacing was quite well done, with me finishing the book feeling like very little time had passed when in fact I had taken two hours to read the novel. The characterization was very well done, with both the hero and heroine of this novel feeling like vibrant, complex individuals to me. The world building was fascinating, and the dangerous political waters swirling in human space added quite high stakes and danger to this novel. One thing I will mention is that this book may be triggering to some readers with trauma histories with the death of the whole Resalian family that were trying to escape human space happening on page. There was some very dark commentary in this novel on human morality, culture and character. This novel is the second in a trilogy with cliffhanger endings. I usually won't read novels with cliffhanger endings because I dislike them so much, so it is an homage to this author's writing chops that I am enjoying these novels and want to continue reading them even with the cliffy endings. The stakes in this space opera were sky high, and the angst was medium to medium-low. I tend to prefer high stakes in my novels, so that was a plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy space opera with romantic elements. An all around enjoyable read.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
