The writing and editing of this sci-fi romance was clumsy in the ARC version of the manuscript, with plenty of typos and awkwardly constructed sentences. Therefore, it took me a while of reading before I was able to enjoy the story. Hopefully that will be corrected in the retail version of the novel. The world building was clumsy, with confusing descriptions of alien creatures like "land fish" and the like. The development of the romantic relationship was of the insta-love variety, which is not my favorite, because the characters are not BUILDING a loving relationship. The plot and pacing was intensely disappointing for me, because the heroine of this novel never used her superpowers to save herself or defeat the bad guys. That was the main reason I wanted to read this romance in the first place, so the fact that it never happened in this book in the series was intensely disappointing. There was little angst and high stakes in this novel, which I typically prefer in a romance novel, but did not enjoy in this one because of the reason previously mentioned. The heroine was too passive and powerless for my liking, even though she supposedly developed superpowers. This novel used the Fated Mates trope and the Shipwrecked on an Alien Planet trope. The world building was two stars. The plot and pacing was two stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship was three stars. I rounded up and gave this novel three stars as the combined rating. This novel has a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a plus. I do not recommend this novel to readers who enjoy sci-fi romance, because of how disappointing it was that the heroine never used her superpowers in any significant way in this book and remained a damsel in distress. I am no longer interested in reading the next book in this series because of that, and will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
