The writing and editing of this novel was really clean in the ARC version of the manuscript, with no typos that I found. The world building was minimal but well done, which might partially be a function of this being the 7th book in this series. I had not read any of the previous books in this series, and I had no problem following along. The characterization was deft without using too many words, which was the case for the writing throughout this short story. Where this novel failed was in the development of the romantic relationship. I did not really feel like these two characters were in love with each other by the end of this story. The plot and pacing were tight and quick, meaning I sped through reading it. There was little angst in this story and high stakes, which I tend to enjoy in a romance novel. This novel used the Kidnapping trope, the Partner in Trouble trope, and the Hero Who Feels Unworthy trope. The world building, plot and pacing were all four stars. The characterization was four stars. The development of the romantic relationship was two stars. I rounded up and gave this novel a combined score of four stars. This novel had a Happy For Now ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus. I recommend this story to fans of the rest of the series, though there are many more excellent sci-fi romances out there, in my opinion. I am not sure that I am interested in reading the next book in the series when it releases. I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
