4 Stars

The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with no typos that I found and well made sentences. The world building was vibrant. I especially enjoyed the excerpts from the media outlets. The characterization was well done, with both hero and heroine being complex, sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship was a fairly minor part of this story, but was pretty well done despite that. The plot and pacing was exciting and quick, with me turning the pages rapidly to find out what was going to happen next. There was a fair amount of angst in this novel, which was fully justified by the horrible things the heroine was going through. There were also very high stakes, which I typically prefer in my novels. The world building, plot, and pacing were all four stars. The characterization was also four stars. The development of the romantic relationship rated three stars for me, but that may be because I primarily choose to read romance novels, so I am used to really top-notch relationship development in my fiction. This novel ends on a happy ending for the protagonists instead of a cliffhanger or a bittersweet note, so that is a really big plus. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy space opera with strong romantic elements. I will keep and eye out for future series by this author. I will not buy myself a keeper copy of this novel, though I quite enjoyed it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
