The writing and editing in this story was quite good, with few typos that I caught in the ARC version of this manuscript. The world building of Kercerikus prison was quite vivid. The characterization of the hero and heroine was quite good. The development of the romantic relationship was quite good, until the author used the dreaded Refusal to Communicate Honestly trope, which almost completely killed all my enjoyment of a novel I had quite liked up until that point. The plot and pacing was exciting, with me turning pages quickly to find out what was going to happen next. There was little angst and high stakes, up until the Refusal to Communicate incident. I would have far preferred the author left out that part, honestly. This novel used the Undercover Agent trope and the Fated Mates trope, in addition to the dreaded Refusal to Communicate Honestly trope. The world building, plot, and pacing of this novel rated four stars. The characterization rated four stars. The development of the romantic relationship rated two stars, because of the inclusion of the Refusal to Communicate Honestly trope. The combined score, therefore, is three stars. This novel ended on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus for this story. I recommend this story to readers who have read and enjoyed this author's other sci-fi romance series set in this universe. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
