2 Stars

The writing and editing of the manuscript was pretty bad in the ARC version. There were so many typos that it really detracted from the reading experience and the sentences were awkwardly and incorrectly constructed. This story was a bit of a confusing mess. The world building was okay, with the city being somewhat well described. The characterization was terrible, with the hero being entirely unsympathetic and the heroine being a cardboard cutout. The development of the romantic relationship was bad, with the heroine loving this hero somehow, even though his desire to break the mate bonding because of his racism against humans made him entirely unloveable. The plot and pacing was a confusing mess. There was plenty of unjustified angst that really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The high stakes would normally be something I would enjoy, but the plot and overall book was so poorly written that I did not in this case. This novel used the Fated Mates trope, the Kidnapping trope, and the Neither Partner Wants a Relationship trope, which fit somewhat oddly with the Kidnapping trope. The world building was three stars. The plot and pacing were two stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship was two stars. The quality of the writing overall was two stars. I therefore gave this novel a combined score of two stars. I do not recommend this sci-fi romance. There are plenty of others much better written. I will not read the next book in this series, and I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
