4 Stars
The writing and editing of this sci-fi romance was clean, with few typos that I found in the ARC version of the manuscript. The world building of the prison was vibrant and grim. The characterization was good, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic individuals. The development of the romantic relationship was quick but believable. The plot and pacing was exciting. There was a medium amount of angst on the hero's part where he was thinking of not taking the heroine with him when he escaped the prison. I have to admit that he lost a lot of my respect when he was thinking of leaving her behind. I did not enjoy that part. The stakes were very high, with life and death consequences. This novel used the Prison Planet trope. The world building, plot, and pacing all rated four stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship also rated four stars. The combined score for this novel was therefore four stars. This book has a Happy For Now ending, with larger unresolved plot issues. I liked the fact that it did not have a cliffhanger ending. I recommend this romance to readers who enjoy dark sci-fi romance. I will want to read the next in the series, though I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel, at least at this time.
