The writing and editing was fairly clean in the ARC version of the manuscript, with only occasional typos. However, the sentence structure was often awkward or incorrect, which really detracted from the reading experience. The world building of the city was grim, but not especially vibrant. It could have been any city in the north part of the US, but I think it was based on Chicago. The characterization was a little flat, with me not getting much of a picture of the personality of either the heroine or hero. The development of the romantic relationship was also a little flat, with me not being moved by the love between these two characters at any point. The plot and pacing was exciting, with many action sequences. However, the writing itself was bad enough that the pacing dragged for me and I struggled to finish this novel. There was high angst in this novel, which I did not particularly enjoy. The heroine was in a state of despair for the majority of this novel. The stakes were really high, which I typically enjoy in a romance novel. This novel used the Partner in Trouble trope and the Surprise Baby trope. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship was two stars. The pacing was one star. The world building and plot were three stars. Therefore, the combined score of this novel was two stars. The book had a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that was a big plus. I do not recommend this novel. I am not interested in reading anything else by this author, and I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this romance.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
