The writing and editing of this story was clean, with no typos that I caught in the ARC version of the manuscript. The world building was interesting, featuring a post alien invasion Earth. The characterization of the heroine was excellent, but the hero was a bit of a cardboard character. The development of the romantic relationship was not awesome, with me the reader feeling sad at the end that this awesome, emotionally strong heroine ended up with this kind of worthless hero. He experienced very little character growth in this novel, and he never admitted his wrong-doing or exhibited remorse for his previous beliefs or behavior, to either himself or the heroine. That was what made this romance entirely unsatisfying for this reader. The plot and pacing was exciting, making me turn the pages rapidly to find out what was going to happen next. There was little angst and very high stakes in this romance, which is one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Alien Invasion trope, the Mating Bond trope, and the Enemies to Lovers trope. The world building, plot and pacing was all four stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship was two stars. The combined score of this novel is therefore three stars. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending, though I was sad to see this amazing heroine end up with this hero. I recommend this sci-fi romance to readers who like dark romances where the hero never acknowledges his wrong or exhibits true remorse. I really like both these authors, so I may give this series another chance by reading the second book in this series when it releases. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.
