4 Stars

The writing and editing was fairly clean in the ARC version of this novel, with only occasional typos or wrong word choices. The world building was creative and vibrant, with the colony and the hero and heroine's farm being vividly described. The characterization was excellent, with the heroine's reactions to her trauma being very believable and her natural gift for tactics and combat being wonderful to see in the heroine of a romance novel. The development of the romantic relationship was natural and organic, especially considering the short length of the story. The plot and pacing was exciting, with me turning pages rapidly to find out what was going to happen next! This story had a medium amount of angst which was fully justified by the heroine's past trauma, and high stakes, which I typically prefer in my romance novels. This novel used the Human Trafficking trope common to many sci-fi romances. It also used the Partner in Trouble trope and had a pining hero. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship rated four stars. The world building, plot, and pacing also rated four stars. The combined score of this novel was therefore four stars. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus to this novel. I recommend this story to readers who enjoy sci-fi romances with alien heroes that read like adventure novels. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novel, though I enjoyed it quite a bit, and will read the next novel in the series quite happily.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
